Build Your Own Battery-Powered Night Lamp Circuit

Description

This circuit can be utilized as a Night Light when a wall mains outlet isn't available for connecting a continuously running miniature neon device. To guarantee minimal battery usage, a single 1.5V cell is employed, along with basic voltage multipliers that drive a highly luminous LED: current consumption is less than 500µA. An optional light-dependent resistor provides the ability to deactivate the circuit in daylight conditions or when ambient room illumination is present, enabling further current conservation. This device is anticipated to operate for approximately 3 months continuously using a standard AA-sized cell, or for roughly 6 months with an alkaline type cell. Incorporating the light-dependent resistor circuitry will likely double, or even triple, the operational lifespan. IC1 produces a square wave at approximately 4 Hz frequencies. C2 & D2 constitute voltage multipliers, necessary to elevate the battery voltage to a peak value sufficient to power the LED.

Integrated Circuit Details

IC1, a 7555 CMOS Timer IC, is a versatile integrated circuit known for its stability and reliability in low-voltage applications. CMOS Timer ICs are digital circuits designed to generate precise time delays or clock signals. They operate reliably with low power consumption, making them ideal for circuits where precise timing is crucial. These ICs typically incorporate internal oscillators and comparators to create timing functions. They’re frequently utilized in circuits requiring controlled switching, pulse generation, and timing functions. Careful consideration should be given to the supply voltage requirements of the IC to ensure stable operation and prevent damage. This particular model, the 7555, is a commonly found and dependable device for such applications.

Parts:

  • R1 = 1M
  • R2 = 1M
  • R3 = 47K
  • R4 = LDR
  • C1 = 100nF-63V
  • C2 = 220uF-25V
  • D1 = Ultra Bright 10mm LED
  • D2 = 1N5819
  • B1 = 1.5V Battery or AA Cell

Notes:

  • IC1 must be a CMOS type: solely these devices can safely operate at 1.5V supply or less.
  • If Photo resistor operation isn't required, eliminate R3 & R4 and connect pin 4 of IC1 to positive supply.
  • Standard LEDs can be used, but light intensity will be poor.
  • A standard 1N4148 type diode can be utilized instead of the 1N5819 Schottky-barrier type diode, but LED intensity will be reduced due to the increased voltage drop.
  • Any Schottky-barrier type diode can be substituted for the 1N5819, such as the BAT46, rated @ 100V 150mA.
